Chapter 11

Bear

I was happy to get the awkwardness out of the way and feel like we were starting over again. Elijah ate three helpings of lasagna and had two big slices of pie with vanilla ice cream as well. It made my heart sing to have someone who enjoyed my food. Was I disappointed that there would not be any more sex between us? Absolutely. But it was going to make the next few weeks go by a lot easier if I wasn’t awkwardly pining for him.

We spent a couple of hours chatting and hanging out drinking beer. We talked about everything from growing up in the same small town to his sculptures and even my Grandma and Ma.

“So how did you get wrangled into cleaning out her house anyways?” I asked. “You seem like unlikely friends.”

“And that’s why you didn’t hightail it out of here the moment you saw it was me.” I laughed.

“Something like that.” Something flashed behind his eyes but before I could read it, it was gone again. “Well, these mosquitoes are starting to eat us alive. What do you say we clear up?”

We hauled the remaining dishes inside and set them on the counter. I expected him to say his goodbyes there, but instead, he filled the sink with soapy water and slipped on an apron. This one was a purple and blue number with white lace trim and I had to hide a smile at the site of a big strong metal worker in my grandma’s favorite apron.

He began to wash the dishes, handing them to me to dry them and put them away. There was something so comfortable about us working together as a team to get the kitchen clean. Over the course
